Carol Klein and Joe Swift of Gardeners world are shown here discussing the many benefits of the GreenSafe. They were most impressed with its potable nature and its excellent insulation allowing you to protect your tender plants through winter and spring and take it down later in the year getting some garden space back.

In fact the Gardeners World team were so impressed with the GreenSafe that it will be featured on tonights Gardeners world programme on BBC 2 between 8:30 and 9:30pm.

Even though the weather was a bit chilly at Malvern the response The GreenSafe received was anything but. We are constantly delighted by the enthusiastic response The GreenSafe receives by people that see it.

It is becoming clear to us that the main benefits that are resonating with the gardening public that have seen the GreenSafe so far are:

• Its considerable insulating properties that make it far more protective of your tender plants than conventional greenhouses
• Its portable nature – the ability to move it to different parts of your garden and the ability to take it down when not in use
• The safety aspect – even though the GreenSafe is made from a very tough and durable plastic it is still very pliable and has no sharp edges to hurt yourself on

The GreenSafe was originally designed with the small garden in mind where space is at a premium and it works perfectly in that environment but what has been interesting to find out from customers at Harrogate and Malvern are the other uses that they saw in the GreenSafe.

Because of the GreenSafes excellent insulation keen gardeners who already own a conventional greenhouse or polly tunnel have been buying them to inflate inside their present greenhouses or polly tunnels during the colder months of the year to protect their tender plants and lowering their heating bills and then using it as extra greenhouse space in spring when they don’t seem to have enough space.

The green-fingered fans thought that the GreenSafe portable greenhouse was a very impressive product.

Daniel Newbould is a Director of the Leeds firm which is distributing the greenhouse and he said: “The reaction we got was just incredible. Everyone thought the GreenSafe was a great product.

“We had lots of inquiries and we took a lot of orders. The Show’s visitors were all impressed by the quality and ease-of-use of the GreenSafe. One of the most popular questions we were asked was: Why hasn’t something like this been invented before?”

Daniel firmly believes that the GreenSafe will revolutionise gardening and over the coming weeks and months, many more gardening fans will get a chance to see the GreenSafe up close as it goes on show at several more gardening shows.

He added: “We were really excited about exhibiting the GreenSafe at the Harrogate show and the reaction we had was just fantastic. We ran popular demonstrations showing the ease and simplicity of erecting and dismantling the GreenSafe along with highlighting its many benefits. Just about everyone who took an interest was very, very impressed with it.”

Propagating herbs in a greenhouse begins the gardening season early and blows away the winter cobwebs. It is also much cheaper than purchasing full-grown garden plants. Annual and biennial herbs can be started in the greenhouse with seeds and perennial herbs with plant cuttings or plugs.

Growing herbs in a greenhouse is very similar to growing vegetables. There are some differences but these depend on the type of herbs you are growing. Some have different growing needs. Mint is best in a raised greenhouse bed whereas Rosemary is better grown in a single pot.

A number of herbs, including chervil and coriander like to be sown in autumn, and will grow well during winter in a frost-free glass or greenhouse. Chervil, for example, grows well in a greenhouse in winter in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Coriander can also be cultivated for seeds or leaves throughout the year if grown in light, fertile and well-drained soil in full sun for seed production, and partial shade for leaf growth.

Herbaceous perennial herbs such as chives, tarragon, thyme and dill that are grown outdoors in mild weather can be forced in a greenhouse during winter. Take the plants from the ground before frost, and replant them in a humus-rich potting mix. With a little nurture they will continue to supply fresh culinary fare throughout winter.
Overwintering to Protect Herbs

Many herbs benefit simply from the protection of a greenhouse even if you don’t plan to harvest them in winter. Anise,cumin, Lemon verbena and parsley, for example, can be brought into the greenhouse when the weather turns cool, and have their roots and shoots wrapped in plastic. Gardeners who grow herbs in containers outdoors may also bring the containers inside a heated greenhouse to store them for the winter.

Here are some instructions for getting the best results:

1. Plant into 9cm (3 1/2in) pots.

2. Place your newly potted plants somewhere warm and bright and don’t forget to water!

3. When the roots start to come through the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot your plants ideally should re-potted into 13cm (5in) pots.

4. Grow on until the first truss or ‘branch’ of flowers has appeared your plants are ready to be planted out into grow bags.

5. Prepare the grow bag by giving it a good shake to break up the compacted compost.

6. Make some holes in the bottom of the bag to allow for drainage. Now cut out the pre marked planting holes and scoop out enough compost to allow the tomatoes to be planted. The top of the root ball should be beneath the top of the bag and have a light covering of compost.

7. Firm in your plants and water.

8. Unless you are growing a bush type tomato, the aim is to create a single stemmed plant. To achieve this  your plant will need to be trained up a cane or piece of string. Tie the tomato plant to the cane or string every 10cm (4in) .

9. To train a single stem, snap out any shoots (side-shoots) that grow in the leaf joints. When your plant has produced 4 sets of trusses, pinch out the growing tip. This should make sure that more of the energy produced by the plant goes into producing fruit.

10. Tomatoes need a lot of water. Generally they will need watering every day, make sure that they get a good soaking on hot and sunny days. If you are out all day and hot weather is forecast, make sure to open your GreenSafe  door (which zips open wide and you can remove the end of the GreenSafe should you want to) before going out in the morning.

11. Once flowers have started to appear, feed with tomato feed around twice a week to ensure the best quality fruit. Before you know it your tomatoes will be ready for picking.
